Marketing 101 (Presented in English)
Ever wonder why you use the toothpaste you use? Or why you always choose the
same soft drink? Chances are, marketing had something to do with it. Everyday,
thousands of companies are marketing their products to their customers and
to one another - from cell phones to computers to cars. How do they do it?
What are the principles driving their strategies?
In this seminar, we will focus on Marketing, what it is, what you can learn
from it and maybe even how to implement a marketing strategy your own business.
Giles Shih, Ph.D., President of local biotechnology company BioResource International
(http://www.briworldwide.com), will present an introduction to Marketing and
how he uses it in his business, followed by a Question and Answer session with
a panel of experts having marketing expertise in various industries. Come join
us and learn about the “business of doing business.”
Dr. Giles Shih co-founded BioResource International, Inc. (BRI) five years
ago to commercialize the technology that his father, Dr. Jason Shih, developed
through his research at North Carolina State University. Giles currently serves
as President of the company and has been managing BRI's business development
efforts since its inception. Giles received his B.S. in Microbiology from Cornell
University and Ph.D. in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics from Emory University.
Prior to co-founding BRI in 1999, Giles served as a consultant to venture capital
firms making investments in biotechnology companies in North Carolina. Giles
is currently enrolled in the Executive MBA program at the Fuqua School of Business
at Duke University.

Julia Cai is currently serving as Software Development Manager for ITRON,
an industry leader in providing hardware and software services for utility
industries. Julia has more than six years of experiences in developing and
marketing enterprise software, and project management. She is also a co-founder
of “BigWay Trading”, an on-line cellular phone accessories store.
Julia received her B.S. in Computer Science from NANYANG Technology University
in Singapore and M.S. in Artificial Intelligence from Birmingham University
in England. She is currently enrolled in the Executive MBA program at the Fuqua
School of Business at Duke University.
Sean Pan is a co-founder, CEO and CMO of Red Pelican, a leading provider of
Marketing Automation Tools and Campaign Management software based in Durham,
NC. With over 14 years experience in bring technology products to market, Sean’s
career track has been focused on computer technology and software solutions,
including high-speed data acquisition systems, customer relationship management
(CRM) software, software development tools, and Web-enabled applications. Prior
to co-founding RedPelican, Sean was Director of Marketing at TogetherSoft,
a leading JAVA development tools company acquired by Borland in 2003. Under
his marketing leadership, he successfully developed and executed marketing
programs that contributed significantly to the company's dramatic growth. Earlier
his career, Sean served in key marketing and marketing management positions
at Silicon Graphics, Edify/S1 Corp. Actional Corp. and Dolch Computer Systems.
His background also includes a five-year engineering tour of duty in hardware
design and software development at DSP Technologies. Sean holds a BS in Electrical
Engineering from San Jose State University and an MBA in Technology Management.
Ed Wallace, President of Braveheart Consulting, is a veteran market analyst
who brings extensive insight and experience into the wireless cellular and
the broadband markets. He has prepared a number of market forecasts and market
assessments for such heavyweights as Ericsson, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, and
Panasonic. In addition he has authored numerous wireless cellular market reports
for research and consulting practices including The Diffusion Group, Strategy
Analytics, The Strategis Group, and The Hatteras Group. Ed recently completed
an assignment in commercial trials of broadband over-the-powerline at Progress
Energy where he led the marketing efforts in a partnership with EarthLink.
Earlier in his career, he was the Sr. Industry and Competitor Analyst for Ericsson
Mobile Phones located in RTP, NC where he provided guidance to senior management
on tactical and strategic issues facing the mobile phone industry. His career
has spanned a number of areas including market analysis, financial management,
supply chain management, and as an adjunct professor. Ed has a MBA in Finance
from East Carolina University and a BA in Economics and Business from Lafayette
Michael Wu is the Founder and Managing Director of Blue Angel Ventures, a
venture advisory and seed funding firm based in RTP, and brings more than 12
years of operating experiences from engineering consultancy and product management
to senior and executive management roles in both start-ups and multinational
corporations. He was a Principal at TechVest Ventures and has been an advisor
and investment banker to several technology and real estate ventures in the
Mid-Atlantic and the Southeast. He has also been Interim CEO/CFO’s in
client and portfolio companies under his advisory. Prior to that over the span
of six years, he has held senior management roles in product management and
technical marketing at Nextel Communications, Siemens, and Ericsson where he
had launched over 20 mobile phones and data devices. Michael holds an M.B.A.
from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University, M.S. in both Electrical
Engineering and Management of Technology from Georgia Tech.
Dr. YanChing Zhang is a Solutions Executive focusing on the academic, government,
and healthcare sector with IBM Healthcare and Life Sciences. She leads a team
of solutions and subject matter experts to help medical and research institutions
in establishing their infrastructures. Prior to her current position with IBM,
YanChing served as a program manager for 3rd party manufacturing with IBM Personal
Computing Division and managed IT teams in three geographies. Prior to joining
IBM, Dr. Zhang held technical and management positions with Lockheed Martin
Information System and ManTech Environmental, Inc in the areas of application
development and high performance computing. In her earlier career, she was
involved extensively in the wind tunnel simulations, computational fluid dynamics
modeling and scientific visualizations. Dr. Zhang received her MBA from Fuqua
School of Business at Duke University, and a Ph.D from North Carolina State
University. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and Master's
degree in Environmental Sciences, both from Peking University, China. Dr. Zhang
is a certified Project Manager Professional (PMP) by Project Management Institute.

Take I-40 West, toward Chapel Hill/Durham. Take the Durham Freeway (Route
147) North, the sign reads "Exit #279B, 147 North, Durham." Take
the next exit (to the right) marked "Research Triangle Park, Cornwallis
Road." At the end of the exit, turn right onto Cornwallis Road. Continue
after the first light (entrances to GlaxoSmithKline to both the right and left)for
about 0.2 miles - the sign of the entrance to MCNC is on the right-hand side.
The MCNC auditorium is next to the front entrance of the building.

Take I-85 to the Durham Freeway (Route 147). Take the Durham Freeway (Route
147) South to the Cornwallis Road Exit. At the end of the ramp, make right
turn on to Cornwallis Road. Go through the first light if it was not red (entrances
to GlaxoSmithKline to both the right and left), and continue for about 0.2
miles - the entrance to MCNC is on the right-hand side, just after the yellow "Signal
Ahead" sign.The MCNC auditorium is next to the front entrance of the building.
